Emily Thornberry claims support for Syrian President Assad has been ‘underestimated’


Support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has been «underestimated», Labour’s shadow foreign secretary has said. 

In remarks branded «repugnant» by one of her Labour colleagues, Emily Thornberry said President Assad is more popular than rebels previously made out, despite claims he has launched chemical weapons attacks against his own people. 

Ms Thornberry, who was previously criticised for claiming botched paperwork not Russian blocking tactics was responsible for delays allowing chemical weapons inspectors into Syria, made the comments in an interview with Prospect magazine.
